When setting out a quotation which has a mis-spelling, or a shocking piece of grammar, or some other obvious mistake in it, the convention is that one reproduces the quotation accurately and then inserts "[sic]" immediately after the mistake to indicate that one knows oneself that this is an error, but that this is how it appeared in the original quotation. It shows that the original was written "sic" - "thus".
Example: "Steve in Holland are [sic] an ignoramus"
