CM 01/02 (or 00/01) was the best version, by far.
Had the balance right, I reckon. If you Google CM0102 forum you will find a whole community built around it - twice a year they release data patches with the then current teams, players, etc. If you look through you can find older patches, too, so if you want to play with Lambert's Norwich with Holt, Wes, etc, you can.
If anyone is interested I've got data updates going back to 2003.
