The unmistakable smell of death

No manager lasts forever. We know that when they join. But it does now feel like this era of the club is drawing to a close. The things managers say when we reach these points are all being said. The baffling crap performances that is all you get from players that are cooked, clearly in evidence. I know its Chelsea, of course it is. But there are ways to lose that don't leave you looking like its all over, and then there's what happened today. The lack of intensity from pretty much everyone (aside from Hanley) is just creating the unmistakable smell of death. The end game is upon us.

To be honest, i don't even know where we go from here. Maybe sacking Daniel is not the right answer, as I don't see anyone short of the Lord himself getting too much more from the squad we have assembled. It's not big enough, fast enough or talented enough. We are absolutely miles off a team that is capable of getting 30+ points. The only hope is that we don't rewrite the record books heading back down.

To a degree, the writing was on the wall last year, despite finishing top with some to spare. This was achieved by being really good at beating the dross. We were flat track bullies. But against the "good" championship teams the record was really pretty poor. A real warning sign.

Not only that, but we then removed from that team quite literally the two best players. Maybe nobody is to blame for that = we couldn't make Spurs give us Skipp, and clearly Emi had been agitating to leave for a while. But a team that couldnt beat the top few Champs teams regularly was then made a lot worse.

Add to that two more years in Pukki's legs. Add to that a set of recruitment that has failed to add anything that we needed, many of which are not even getting minutes, and you have to wonder what the plan was for this year. The talk was bold, about making sure that Farke had a gun and plenty of bullets. Well, we're 9 games in and have scored TWO goals. One a penalty. We dont have a gun. We dont even have a picture of a gun, never mind the weaponry needed to survive in the Prem.

Worst of all, I really worry what we'll have when we go back down. Clearly none of the loan lads are staying, so no Gilmour/Williams/Normann/Kabak. Aarons will not stay another season, and clearly Todd wants out. What is left that could mount a strong promotion bid? I really worry that not only is this season going to be s**t, but our strategy is going to back fire for next season too. Are we relying on another 25+ goals from Pukki?

Maybe though, this is just the reality of modern football. Without a billionaire backer, you just need to luck out on every purchase, on every youth teamer to have a hope in hell. We've had an incredible run of players where we've hit the jackpot. Maybe that luck is now running out and mean reversion will kick in.

Honestly, I have no idea what the answer is from here. I can't imagine there is any up and coming manager that would like to take us on right now. I hate seeing the club end up like this, and I hate everyone ganging up on Daniel, who has worked miracles for us. But we are really in a right old mess at the moment.

Who knows, maybe they'll be an incredible week of training and we'll hump Dirty Leeds 4-1 next week. But I won't be betting on it.
