Unless you’re expecting a centre back to constantly fill in
for him then I don’t understand how anyone can’t see what an absolute liability he is. Plays like a left wing back in a 3-4-3 but while in a 4-3-3 where there’s a lot of defensive responsibility placed upon him. Constantly leaves a huge gap down his side for right sided players to run into and it was noticeable how the majority of Watford’s attacks came that side. Also failed to track Sarr for the rebound on the third goal. He looks spoils at making blocks when in the correct position, but he’s generally not.
I do agree the centre backs weren’t good enough either, but I think they could do a job under the right coach in a system that protects them. Look at how Hanley played vs England in the euros. Williams does not seem to have a very high football iq or any tactical discipline/sense, which is difficult to cover up.
