Opinions innit?

I certainly see your point and would like to minimise squad churn as much as possible, keeping hold of our best players.

But y'know, if the Spanish champs come in with a fair offer (£25M would be ballpark, but hopefully more if there's a couple of interested parties) then I can see the attraction for Max and for us.

Blocking a move could leave us with a less motivated player (tho his attitude last year was great). Selling him might give us the financial heft to make the signings you identified as needed for strengthening the squad.

A fair bit of Max's value lies in his youth and how good he *could* get. There's a strong argument that cashing in and spreading that 'value' around the squad would give us a better chance of survival and the whoever the new Max/Jamal/Todd more time to settle rather than being dumped in and slaughtered in the heat of the Prem (tho still the opportunity to challenge the first team incumbents).

So, while I definitely see your point, I'd not have said its quite so black and white.
