Another senior executive at a Championship club, who has overseen promotions with and without parachute payments (and wished to remain nameless), believes the focus should be fixed elsewhere.

“For people in EFL who are not doing their jobs properly, it’s become a really easy stick to beat teams with,” he says. “If you look at the history of the Championship, this year is an anomaly. Prior to this season, Fulham were the only team in the last three years who went straight back up, and that was by the (2019-20) playoffs.
