His denialism could be his coping mechanism - he works in an insular industry with high rates of suicide.
Being less generous, he's likely also bored when off shore and seems to enjoy baiting people on here.
In the current circumstances it's pretty crass regardless of motives. Doubt he views himself as deeply unpleasant, but his online persona is appalling (and the lies/wilful misunderstanding he propagates dangerous)
