If I understand correctly
Your ex father in law was diagnosed with Covid, and was in hospital, and was then included in the figures for people with Covid in hospitals.
I believe that the reason for his inclusion in the numbers of people with Covid in hospital was partially because he had Covid, and partially because he was in hospital.
