It'd take far too long to explain in detail why it's not (to the level they're trying to apply it) - briefly though...

The video readouts aren't fast enough (and without tagging up every limb aren't going to get there any time soon) - it's not the same as the tennis or cricket.

The computer modelling based on said readouts is much less accurate than you think. (which is why the cricket has umpire call)

Human observation is better than you give it credit for.

To be clear

It can certainly be used to clear up mistakes when they're made.

When the margins are (very) thin it is not accurate enough. If it's not accurate enough you need to apply pragmatism - on field (or via VAR I don't care) - but the imaginary lines they draw for offsides are nonsense.

Because of that, and the length of time it's taking to make decisions it is getting derided. Which is stupid.
