I thought the low transfer fee reflected his high wages
Therefore, looking at the deal overall, although a higher wage than we might want to pay, the fee is lower to compensate and therefore the economics work out over the term of the contract.
E.g. say the wages are £15k a week more than we would like to pay. That's £2.3m over 3 years. A £3m fee rather than a £5m fee covers that.
