maybe they just thought that £10m was a fair price

for a relegated left-back who didn't have a great season, especially with the current economic uncertainty. After all, they ended up signing a Greek international, who by all accounts had a great season, for about the same price.

We simply disagreed with their valuation and so they looked elsewhere. Doesn't seem all that odious to me.
