There was an academic analysis of 'successful signings'

About a decade ago which suggested 'par' was having about 50/50 success/failures.

Small nudges either way made big changes in perception. It was quite interesting and was to an extent true regardless of funds (more fees, didn't equal more success... See Leeds and Man utd)
