The more deeply depressing thing is that you need to gamble the financial foundations of a club just to survive. Not to compete.

Also, just because there has been a stream of people willing to chuck money at clubs for the last few decades doesn't mean that'll continue indefinitely (and also, even that being the case, there have been dozens who have done that and failed... On the other side, what, Leicester and maybe Wigan?)

I suppose it's easier sometimes to criticise the clubs for not playing along than it is to question the entire structure of the 'sport'.
