I'm really confused as to why we chose to bat here

Inexperienced batting line up, clouds and some rain forecast for the first two days (then sun from Friday) and with our recent awful batting record in the first tests of series in recent years. Good bowling attack available. Don't really get it other than they had decided that was what they would do regardless.
