Suggy calls it "classic signs of someone who's clinging on to the last shards of his self
belief". I call it simply delusional. Either way, I don't think it's outright lies; but that they are trying to convince themselves that things can somehow be put right and that they are not far from doing so. Maybe players need to do this, because the consequences of self-awareness are all too awful to contemplate.
