I find this one of the most useful sites for getting context.

The numbers for England today were given as 828 but of those only 53% of those were people who died on 6th of 7th April. A couple of those deaths announced today died on the 4th and 5th March.

The figures for daily fatalities are therefore a bit all over the place due to how they are announced/reported. I don't know if the other countries do the same in which case I suppose its a like for like comparison but I think the thing to look for are trends averaged out over several days and at the moment probably the ray of hope will be if the positive case number increases continue to reduce as they have been.
