According to the excellent biography of JF by Jim Read - its a common misunderstanding that "coming out" was the cause of the ending of JF's football career. In fact it was injuries that eventually did for him. He came out while at Torquay but then had a successful career in Scotland and to some extent in the States.
That's not to deny that he had to endure terrible abuse from fans and players - but,in a sense, the real story is that he actually defeated the homophobes - but not the injuries.
