I think football is shot at 60 frames per second. So if the time the ball is kicked can be identified exactly it is only accurate to 1/60th of a second. And it can't be identified that accurately anyway because the ball leaving the foot is a process which takes longer than 1/60th of a second.

At the same time an attacker running at a fast pace, but not all out sprint, is going around 20km/h. Which is 6000mm per second. So for every frame they can be moving forward 1cm. If a defender is running the opposite way at the same speed then the difference between the players can be 2cm between frames.

So even if the timing of the ball leaving the foot could be identified exactly (which it can't), there is still 2cm+ margin for error depending on the situation. And that could be even more if you add the independent speed of the leg (or armpit) to that of the body.

VAR trying to give marginal decisions like this is just nonsense.
