It's not whether it's clear or obvious to the ref, but whether the ref is clearly and obviously wrong on video review.
Because you're either offside or onside, they say there's no grey area here so don't need to worry about clear and obvious (which is for things like red card offences where you could argue for a yellow).
Obviously cases like this show why that's bollocks though and it's not black and white because of technology limitations.
