2 seasons of parachute payments if only up for one season
The reality, as you say, is it's not possible to be a self-funding championship club (and avoid relegation) without selling players to cover the shortfall between revenue and the wage bill required to compete.
There are of course exceptions to this rule in the short-term, but long-term, absent cash coming in from an owner or player sales, maintaining a competitive championship squad costs more than the club earns.
