Boris general election plan......

was to get Labour to vote to hold a general election before the Brexit date... however, once agreed, the Tories were then going to change the general election date until just after Brexit so that parliament would be stopped for a general election and no deal could go through. Boris didn't expect Labour not to agree to a general election.
