Perfectly possible that the public was lied to ...

In fact, I think most people think the public has indeed been lied to - most people think they know perfectly well why prorogation has taken place - it's just that (a) that almost certainly has no impact on its legality - it's not justiciable; and (b) many think this Parliament is effectively defunct and dysfunctional, and essentially, they don't care that it's been prorogued - it's had years to deal with Brexit and has, instead, talked itself to a standstill - it will return on 14/10, when again, it can consider matters before the end of October.
