Apparently he has made pretty much no effort to learn Spanish or fit in
So I'm not sure it's the lifestyle (in fact that's one of the reasons he's so disliked there). I think now it's just a matter of hostility between him and Madrid. He isn't going to take a pay cut to let them off the hook - he's going to make sure he gets every penny they're contracted to pay him.
