Part of the issue with Maddison is that he is a different type of player to those England currently employ while Sancho and Hudson-Odoi, as speedy wide players who run with the ball, fit easily into Southgate's one tactic. Integrating Maddison would require a bit of a change in tactics and Southgate looks keen to stick to the one that made him a media darling...
