My uncle was certainly pretty militant 'til the bitter end.

My own view is that the real mistake was not rebuilding those local economies once the pits closed/heavy industry ceased. Missed opportunity really.

But they weren't, and never would be, Tory voting areas so they were left to fend for themselves.
