has specifically ruled out a customs union because that is incompatible with ‘independent’ trade deals, but doesn’t want a hard border in N Ireland. Classic ‘cake and eat it’ because a customs union is ultimately the only way a hard border can be avoided..... which is why there is all the arguing over whether we can withdraw from the backstop, and whether it’s time limited.
