FAO Jim Nasium: Well I'm not letting this one go...without comment...

Firstly you have the great myths surronding him and I will attempt to put them to bed:
1) 'He glamourises Coke and Herion...': Are you kidding me? I would say much like Trainspotting did, it's the total opposite. The picture he paints of his life on drugs is hardly nice and dreamy, is it? I know a lot of Babyshambles and Libertines fans, I've spent many a night in pubs and clubs waiting for Pete to show for gigs and talking to people. I've met people who have said Peter's lyrics and music stopped them commiting suicide, brought some out of serious depression (including one of my best friends).
2) 'He's talentless' He's always had talent at school he got top marks in every subject at both GCSE's and A-Levels, that surely indicates talent of some kind. Lyrically he's an absolute genius. At times his lyrics are just simply sublime. Some of my personal favourites are from his sessions stuff and I will send anybody on this board copies if they are interested...one song - I Love You (But You're Green) features possibly the greatest line ever written:
'...it's the blood from broken hearts that writes the words to every song...'
If Pete Doherty died tomorrow he would without doubt live on amongst a generation of indie fans and bands that he has helped create and influence. His lyrics will be seen as the greatest of his generation. He has a massive music following, in 2004 he had 3 top ten singles with 3 different acts which was a record in itself. He has sold a couple of million albums through The Libertines and Babyshambles, I'd imagine this would double pretty quickly if he died.
What I've seen and my friends have seen of Pete at a gig one night is reported so differently in the tabloids the next. An example of this was on New Year's Eve when he played a gig at his flat. The Sun reported they charged people ?50 to get in (it was ?10) and Pete was out of it. Pete actually played for a total of 4hrs. The last hour he invited the 40 or so fans in his flat, one by one into his room and gave them one song request. One girl who spoke to 2 weeks ago told me he played her 5 songs though cos she said he never turned up to the gigs he had tickets for. Drugs ruin people at the end of the day. Most fans of Pete know there is a good person there, almost crying to get out...we've seen it over the years and as Graham Coxon said the other day 'You can never trust anyone says on drugs' and that for me extends to personalities, so the Pete the Sun Nation see for me isn't the real one, just a man totally ruined by drugs, a troubled past and broken hearts.
