More like 4 or 5 I think? Unless you bought it second hand and the minimum OS version it wants you to update to is about 2 years old itself.

I mean, iOS 12 supports all the way back to the iPhone 5s which is FIVE years old.

Also, it's not Apple which does that - it's the app developer. Sometimes the reason is because there are features which simply cannot be supported on your phone because the technology it uses wasn't introduced until later. Often it is because it is extremely expensive for them to support and maintain 20 different versions of their software when only 2% of users are still using version 1...
