It is fundamentally impossible for us to know how Maddison playing for City in 16-17 would have worked out, but I admire your determination to state otherwise.

What is pretty likely is that the same way Daniel Farke did not think that Aarons was ready for a bench appearance last season, Alex Neil (and Alan Irvine) felt that Maddison was not ready in Sept 2016.
