Yep, binoculars are nifty
Telescopes for astronomy tend to be large and turn everything back to front. So not so useful for the boats.
You can get some nice ones for not too much. 50s are probably the best bet.
Think of them as light funnels - if you want to look at faint stuff (stars) you need bigger ones. The bigger you go the harder they are to hold...
