Why does seeding in sport competitions have to exist?
Seems unfair in any sport with a seeding type tournament for the top teams/players to get weaken opposition. If you're not a top team [champs league for example] or player [tennis], your chances of progressing are vastly less than a non-seeded type of competition. If Tennis or champions league for the above examples weren't seeded, I'm pretty sure the outcomes would have been different.
Main explanation must be profit-making? Can't say its a fair system as each player/team should surely start as equals?
