Anyone know much about the academy set up?

My 11 year old nephew attended a trial for the academy (in Suffolk of all places) and has now received a letter offering him a place on the Elite Player Developement programme. My sister is a single mother and knows nothing about football and has just told me this news. Does anyone know what this means exactly? I’m guessing he’s not in the academy as such, but on some sort of pathway stream?

I’m sure all will be told in time, but I’m one very proud and excited uncle nonetheless and would appreciate any knowledge or advice.
