The slower cars sit in the "slow" lane, and will only pull into the fast lane to
overtake, and tend to only do so if they have very good visibility behind them.
Yes, you do get cars, not only Maseratis, doing 200km/h+ and braking hard when there are slower cars in front of them but it normally works out OK. Those autobahns are built for speed to though so the visibility is very good both in front and behind. Those not suitable for it, which is actually the majority, do have speed limits.
Also, a lot of them tend to put on their outside indicator when traffic is ahead to signal the drivers ahead that they are going at high speed so please move back into the slower lane. It's not a rude "get the f**k out of my way" behaviour but rather just a warning.
The fast drivers usually only tend to do so when they have a clear enough road for it.
However, there are t**ts on every road as we know so things can happen like with me and my ex-wife a few years ago when, being inexperienced on such roads, she pulled out to overtake on a two lane autobahn at about 160km/h, having checked her mirrors and all but with her driving in a normal country head on. Before we knew it, a car closed in at lightning speed behind us (from distance). I'm estimating at least 250kph cos they made us feel like we were doing 30. They had plenty of time to slow down or to warn us but didn't. Anyway, missus checks her inside, indicates to pull back into the slower lane, and then as she starts to do so, Das Twat without warning just decides to pass us on the inside at that speed.
Must have missed him, and death for all of us, by inches, but his girlfriend still gave us a grin and a finger as they scraped past and back into the fast lane ahead.
Never worse those underpants again. So moral of the story is, be aware that what is in your mirrors can be moving extremely fast, so be very careful when pulling into the fast lane.
Cor that was too many words
