Pretty impossible to play to lose if your opponents are trying not to win. We buggered it up with the Panama game so we might as well play to win now and take our medicine.
If we lose to someone decent rather than to someone mediocre we can at least keep pretending we're better than we are (this is probably Southgate's thinking).
