Stephenson tended to work at 4'8 (1/2), which became the standard gauge in 1840s (I think?) and more or less what the Yanks standardised on in the end

He is on record as saying he would have chosen a gauge a few inches wider if he was starting again.

Poor Brunel backed the wrong horse.
