I must admit in real time at the ground I thought it looked a penalty but the explanation given and the fuss around it shows why they need to be careful with VAR and setting the parameters of when it’s used.
If the video ref interjects there then surely they should interject any time there is a challenge which might be a foul anywhere on the pitch? I’m sure there were 10 or 15 similar challenges last night outside the box. Some will have been given, some won’t and the fact there may be contact doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a pen. It’s a subjective judgment ultimately. There was contact but he did also fling himself to the floor.
Thought we had a shout for a pen for a challenge on lewis as well but there is no fuss about that.
Of course thickos like Shearer are not capable of any kind of thoughtful analysis of these situations.
