I think we have (so far) just been happy to let his contract expire

Whether recent increased focus on his statistical importance to the results changes that remains to be seen but I suspect what we can/will offer him wages wise may not be enough to convince him to stay as he will have other offers.

That said if it’s only for a year presumably the club has a bit of flex in terms of wages it can offer as its relatively low risk.
