You say it 'would' when clearly the case is 'might'. Or at least as plausibly it might well have hampered his development, since he would (correctly) have been behind Pritchard and (still playing well then) Wes in the pecking order. We had no need for him last season (we scored billions of goals, remember - hard to see how he'd have improved matters) so he almost certainly wouldn't have got a game.
