Watkins scored a lot for Barnsley, but with the team more structured around his strengths. We could do the same and adjust the team to play to his strengths, but then we'd probably be mid table at best, because he's not that good.

I fear he could be the kind of player that is good with a team built around his strengths, but not so useful when he has to play more of a support role.

Although your point is also undoubtedly true, that most of the squad that have been here for years are also underperforming right now. Which makes it seems more of a wider management and tactical issue.
