Also as a Defence Sec he is in a particularly sensitive position whereby he can't be seen to be engaging in behaviour that would get those he represents reprimanded. See eg the Sub Commander recently relieved of duties due to a perceived relationship with a colleague.

So unless he is whiter than white over this, his position is probably untenable.
