spending all their income on just the wages (so ground improvements and player purchases have to come out of the owner's pocket)
They were unlucky (!) in that their last playoff push pitched them against the division's form side. Just one season in the top flight would give them breathing space (though it wouldn't make money for Evans, which was, presumably, his original plan)
