but the two are surely linked to a reasonable extent. If your attackers are carrying no threat and are losing the ball whenever its worked into the final third, then the defence is going to be under a lot more pressure.

Martin has looked a real liability this game. He's finished as a right back I think; his positioning has been really poor.
