Shit, I don't believe this - I just typed a reply & it logged me out! Anyway,

many thanks for the links - those poems were right up my street. I'd only read Crow (allegedly his masterpiece) & something similar (can't remember which) so gave up.

I generally like fairly short poems, as I find them - if good - so dense with reference & meaning I have to re-read them many times. Good poetry (for me) points outwards, suggesting many different places, different worlds.

If you like poetry set to music I can recommend A Boy And A Girl by Octavio Paz, music by Eric Whitacre; it's very simple but the last verse is so weird, mysterious & inscrutable I'm quite obsessed by it.

Many thanks again for the links. i'll try some more Hughes, this time with more optimism!
