I used to make a living with this sort of advice ... but here goes.

How much depends on a number of things. A .co.uk or ,org or .org.uk domain name is much cheaper than a .com. You usually register for 2 years.

However, you might also want hosting with your domain name. That can cost more depending on what facilities you want (bandwitdh, webspace, database, scripting languages). All of that will be determined by what you want your website to do, and how busy you imagine it'll be.

I've used this (User Posted Link outfit in the past for registration, and they're very good - thier hosting packages look good also, but I get free hosting from my former employers (not sure if they're aware of this dieal, but hey-ho).

There are a lot of sharks in this market, so run any propective purchase before a likely party before signing anything or parting with any spondoolies.
