You don't tend to pay up the contract when a player is sold as far as I know. I guess that there might be an issue if you are trying to offload a player who doesn't want to go but in this case all the evidence points to him wanting to move North, e.g. multiple sources, plus the fact that he was such a Leeds lad in the first place. It's only a handful of conspiracy theorists who believe that this is fake news spread by the club.
