i put it down more to naivety and belief he could do a James McCarthy
as he was top scorer, from midfield, in the league at the time (or thereabouts weren't he?) and lots of managers often go for players from their previous clubs as they know them, it really wasn't that strange a signing at all
at the time he came to us we started winning so there was less chance for him to break into the team - and when he did get to play he really wasn't that good.
there really isn't anything particularly unusual in any of that
