His 12th Symphony was titled "The Year 1917", and is very programmatic. The movements are
named to commemorate events and places of the revolution. Shostakovich was conflicted, no doubt, but there's also no doubt that he wrote pieces to satisfy his political masters. Symphony No. 12 is one of those.
