Thanks all except essex...
...have ordered a BT extender jobby that Trusted Reviews recommended. I had read some poor reviews on how much boost they give to a wi-fi signal but having looked into it more think some of it is to do with the user and/or whether their router is 2.4GHz band or 5. Ours is dual so have bought a booster that does both. Fingers crossed...
