They prize big names

(obviously in terms of fame - Zola isn't a very big name!)

It's a bit like QPR's owners trying to accumulate everyone they could who was a big name in the Premier League about 6 or 7 years earlier (probably when they got interested in football).

Far East fans are very celebrity/individual obsessed (look at XXL's obsession with particular players, or those Japanese fans who used to just support whichever team David Beckham played for).

Brum's owners probably loved Zola as a player, and therefore it boosts their ego to have him working for them.
