First choice and no-hopers hear first

unless it's very tight between two and there might be a further interview - or they might try to find a way to hire both.

If they can't come to terms with their preferred candidate they'll try number two on the list and so on.

If it's a big organisation it can take a while for even the first choice to hear as HR can slow things right up, or the hiring manager is balls to the wall doing other stuff.

When I've hired people I usually tell them they'll hear in a week, then call the one I want to hire the same afternoon which gives me enough wriggle room if I need to move down the list. Someone clearly unsuited just gets a call that first afternoon saying thanks but no thanks.
